Survivors and Dependents Assistance (DEA)

To draw benefits from the DEA program, the student must be the son, daughter, or spouse of a service member who has either passed away, been permanently disabled, died from a service-connected disability, is missing in action or forcibly detained by a foreign power or government.
DEA benefits must be used by the student, if a he or she is a child of said veteran between the ages of 18 and 26. If the child is a service member themselves, this time period can be extended but benefits must only be used if that individual has received anything but a dishonorable discharge.
Regarding education for the spouse of the deceased or disabled veteran - benefits must be drawn no more than 10 years after the death or disability of the veteran or 10 years after the VA has found you eligible to receive benefits under the DEA. If, however, the spouse was on active duty at the time of death, benefits are extended to 20 years from the date of death.
